WALLA WALLA – GBX Group LLC, which specializes in acquiring, preserving and operating historic real estate, has partnered with the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation in purchasing and preserving the A.M. Jensen Company building, 54 E. Main St., Walla Walla. The nearly 50,000 square foot building was the former home to the Macy’s department store which closed in 2020.
“We are proud to play a role in safeguarding the A.M. Jensen Company Building and ensuring it remains a key part of the community’s identity,” GBX Group Chief Executive Officer Drew Sparacia said. “GBX aims to help preserve its historical significance while our company explores opportunities to revitalize the space for future hospitality and retail commercial use.”
According to GBX Group LLC, the A.M. Jensen Building was originally constructed in 1919 and represents the Neoclassical and Beaux Arts styles with mid-century Modern style through features such as veneer brick and white terra cotta that clads the upper story of the main facades. The building is located on a prominent commercial site in the Walla Walla Downtown Historic District.
“Preserving historic buildings is about honoring our past while investing in our future,” Washington Trust for Historic Preservation Executive Director Chris Moore said. “The A.M. Jensen Company Building’s story is an integral part of Walla Walla’s heritage, and we are committed to ensuring it is restored as a dynamic presence in the city’s Downtown Historic District.”
GBX Group LLC is currently in the planning and predevelopment phase of the historic redevelopment project for the A.M. Jensen Company Building.
