MILTON-FREEWATER – If you live in Milton-Freewater, the response time for a medical emergency is about to get a whole lot faster.
Milton-Freewater Rural Fire Department and EMS will soon break ground on a new 9,000 square foot ambulance station on the corner of South Columbia Street and Northeast Fifth Avenue.
With 68 percent of the department’s ambulance calls taking place within Milton-Freewater’s city limits, Fire Chief Rick Saager said the new response times will be five to eight minutes quicker.
Saager explains the $2.5 million facility will be privately funded. Once ground is broken, Walla Walla-based Nelson Construction hopes to have the building ready for use in four to five months.
The building will house two ambulances and be equipped with sleeping quarters to allow the station to be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
