UMATILLA COUNTY – A new gate on Government Mountain Road has sparked social media debate among recreationists after blocking vehicle access 12 miles above Powerline Road and Government Mountain Road.
Umatilla County Commissioner Dan Dorran confirmed private landowners installed the gate for safety during active logging season and for fire protection. While the gate’s location may shift, landowners retain sole authority over when it opens.
“The land beyond the gate is controlled by private landowners,” Dorran said, noting that the road is not accessible to the public for the time being.
It remains unclear if future restrictions will apply once the road reopens. Dorran did not comment on potential access rules, citing the rights of the private landowners.
