Neighbors For a Better Pendleton supports city ordinance changes

PENDLETON – Neighbors For a Better Pendleton (NFBP) has announced it supports changes to two ordinances dealing with camping and exclusion that the Pendleton City Council will consider at its meeting at 7 p.m. in council chambers today (Tuesday). The group of business people and citizens calls it a “temporary step” to strengthen the city’s position in defending against the lawsuit filed by five homeless people challenging the current ordinance.
In a news release, the group states:
The proposal divides the current ordinance into two separate measures: one establishing the right to rest and another creating an exclusion process for individuals who repeatedly violate the law.
NFBP believes these updates will better position the City to respond to the legal challenges and argue that the lawsuit should be dismissed because the revised code would now comply with applicable legal requirements. Approving these updates would also allow the newly elected City Council in 2027 to focus on developing stronger, long-term ordinances that better serves the Pendleton community.
NFBP believes the proposed ordinances are an important step forward and encourages the City Council to approve them as an interim solution while the legal process continues.
