NE Oregon forests have money to spend

NORTHEAST OREGON – Proposals that would benefit the Umatilla, Malheur, and Wallowa Whitman National Forests are now being accepted by the Northeast Oregon Forests Resource Advisory Committee. The total amount of funds available is estimated at $1.2 million. Proposals are due by April 15.

The committee is comprised of citizens representing a variety of natural-resource-based interests. They were selected by the Secretary of Agriculture to advise the forest service on the use of funds allocated to forests in Northeast Oregon through the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000. Members oversee proposed land management projects on or adjacent to the national forests in Baker, Grant, Harney, Morrow, Union, Wallowa, and Wheeler counties and make recommendations on which projects should be funded.

Nonprofit and youth-based organizations, state and county governments, academic, and private enterprises are encouraged to propose the projects. They should make additional investments and create jobs through improving infrastructure, bettering land health and water quality, and implementing stewardship objectives that enhance the ecosystems. Some examples include fish habitat restoration, road and trail maintenance, noxious weed control, and re-establishing native species.

Those applying are encouraged to discuss their proposals with a forest service representative prior to submission. Each national forest has more information and the proper forms on their websites.
