National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center Announces 2023 Summer Programs, Events

BAKER CITY — The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is offering a variety of programs and events in and near Baker City, Ore. throughout the summer. 

Members of the public can learn about Baker County’s rich mining history and see live demonstrations of gold panning from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 27, at Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area, 211 Austin St, Sumpter, OR 97877.  

A new event, Oregon Trail Days, will kick offThursday, June 8,with “Dr. Balthasar’s Traveling Medicine Show” performed by renowned interpretive educator Mike Folinfrom 4 to 7 p.m. at Baker City Farmers Market, 1760 Valley Ave., Baker City.  

Folin will be telling Jack Tales from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, June 9, at Baker County Library, 2400 Resort St, Baker City. At 6 p.m. that evening he’ll portray immigrant Sean O’Shaughnessy in “Saints Preserve Us! The Irish in America” at Crossroads Carnegie Arts Center, 2020 Auburn Ave., Baker City.  

Karen Haas will present a riveting living history performance entitled “Wagons West” from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, June 9, at Baker Heritage Museum, 2480 Grove St., Baker City.  

Continuing the Oregon Trail Days fun Saturday, June 10, NHOTIC will sponsor family-friendly activities from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. including games, music and a downtown scavenger hunt at Geiser-Pollman Park, 1723 Madison St, Baker City.  

NHOTIC will also take part in Baker City’s annual Miners Jubilee with an archaeology and geology dig experience plus a pioneer dress-up photo station at the Baker Heritage Museum, 2480 Grove St., Baker City.   

The center is currently closed for renovations.
