MOSCOW, Idaho – DNA of Bryan C. Kohberger, 28, the man accused of killing four University of Idaho students, was found on a knife sheath, and his cellphone was shut off for about two hours during the time of the murders, an investigator said in court documents unsealed Thursday. The court documents were made public just prior to Kohberger appearing in court to face charges of four counts of first-degree murder and felony burglary.
An encounter between a masked intruder and a surviving roommate the night of the fatal stabbings is also detailed in the court documents, along with information on how investigators matched the DNA on the knife sheath to DNA collected by FBI agents recovered from trash taken from Kohberger’s parents’ home in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania.
On Tuesday, following a brief hearing in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, Kohberger waived extradition. On Wednesday, Kohberger was flown back to Idaho by the Pennsylvania State Police and booked into the Latah County Jail in Moscow, Idaho.
While the suspect was still in Pennsylvania, Public Defender Jason A. La Bar told reporters that Kohberger was eager to be exonerated and should be presumed innocent and “not tried in the court of public opinion.”
