HERMISTON – The Hermiston School District (HSD) Board of Directors will vote on a recommendation that the district return to the fold of the InterMountain Education Service District (IMESD) on May 11. IMESD Superintendent Mark Mulvihill said he’s ready to welcome them back.

HSD opted to pay for its own special services in 2015. Since then, IMESD has been paying Hermiston a stipend and the local district supplies its own special education, technology, school improvement, and administrative services.

When the split came, Hermiston was a growing school district and is still the largest in Eastern Oregon. However enrollment is falling and the administrators at HSD have changed. Throughout the time, IMESD has also helped the Hermiston School District when asked and Mulvihill said he hopes the school board agrees to return.

“It’s a wonderful thing right now,” he said. “When we look at our society and we look at polarization and some of the things that are going on, it is so important that we unite. It is so important that we find common ground and compromises.”
