PENDLETON – It’s National School Choice Week. InterMountain Education Service District Superintendent Mark Mulvihill said he supports school choice, within the public education system.

“If a family feels like an experience in a different district or a different school would meet their needs, and most importantly, they’re going to support that school and teacher then let’s do it,” he said. “Online learning, if a parent want’s that as an option, that’s great too.”

Mulvihill draws a line in the sand over the question of vouchers for private schools, however.

“You’re talking taking money that is taxpayer money meant for all our kids for public education, which is the game changer and the basis for American democracy, and allowing people to privatize that for their own schooling choice, I have a problem with that,” he said. “I don’t have a problem if they want to go to that school. I have a problem using taxpayer dollars meant for all of our kids and the common good.”
