Multiple agencies respond to fires near Hilgard and Perry. Investigation continues

HILGARD & PERRY – On the afternoon of Monday, June 8, multiple agencies responded to a pair of small wildfires near the unincorporated communities of Hilgard and Perry along I-84, just west of La Grande. 

The Five Points Fire (Hilgard fire) located near Five Points Creek and the Perry Fire near Perry reached two-acres and a half-acre respectively before they were successfully contained. The fires were initially reported around 1:45 PM. According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO) local responders did not fully leave the area until around 9:00 PM. 

Thankfully, no damage or injuries were reported and no evacuations enacted as both fires were relatively far from any structures. According to Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) District Forester Justin Lauer, two ODF engines and a small U.S. Forest Service hand crew were still on scene as of June 10 to assist with final cleanup of the Five-Points Fire, while the Perry Fire has been fully mopped up. The cause of the fire is, officially, still under investigation according to Lauer. 

Though contained with minimal spread, Lauer also noted that the two fires are a good example of the current dry fuel conditions despite it being early in the 2026 fire season. The public is reminded to follow local fuel and fire regulations. 

Agencies that responded to the two fires include (but are not explicitly limited to) the USFS, ODF, Union Pacific Railroad, Oregon State Police, Union County Sheriff’s Office, La Grande Rural Fire Protection District, La Grande Fire Department, and other local fire and EMS agencies.
