BAKER CITY – Baker City Fire and Rescue took part in a regional extrication event in Baker City over the weekend. According to the department, “instructors from Baker City Fire, Baker Rural Fire, and Westside Fire (Hood River, OR) spent the day shredding up cars with students from Baker and Union Counties. Students started off learning about properly initiating a safe and effective response, tool and vehicle safety, and finished out the remainder of the day destroying cars.
Students represented 5 different local agencies including a group of cadet firefighters (high school) looking to either begin a path in the fire service or serve their communities.
We are very grateful for the excellent hospitality of the crew from B&K Auto Salvage. Crews spent hours this week creating a carnage of destroyed vehicles for the class to use.”
On the second day of this event the “regional extrication training class pitted the students against commercial vehicles and some of the more technical aspects of extrication. The crews from Baker City, Baker Rural, Bowen Valley, La Grande Rural, and North Powder teamed up with Roadrunner Towing to lift, stabilize, and cut into commercial vehicles.
While semi-truck crashes are less common, they pose a large threat to rescuers. James and his crew helped guide all attendees through equipment, techniques, and safe practices allowing for a final evolution where recovery crews worked with rescuers to lift a trailer 24” off of a passenger car.”
