MT. VERNON – The latest recipient of the Grant County Senior Advisory Council’s Service to Seniors award has been announced. The Mt. Vernon Volunteer Fire Department will receive the honorable award on March 9th, recognizing their Elderly Food Basket program, which donates food to local families in need during the holidays.

Recently, Mt. Vernon Volunteer Fire Chief Justin May was on KJDY’s Coffee Time, and explained a bit about the program:

“We tried to figure out when it started a while back, but we couldn’t. I think late-90’s, it’s hard to say.

Now, we keep it to about fifty families or elderly residents, or in some cases, people who have just had a rough go—a spouse or a family member passed—and need a little assistance.

It’s quite the program, and it takes quite the donations. You know, we go out of town shopping, and we average over the scales about 3,000 pounds of food.”

The award presentation will take place at the Celebrate Good Neighbors event held in Mt. Vernon on Saturday, March 9th.

Folks can get more information on the event by calling Mt. Vernon City Hall at (541) 932-4688.
