MT. VERNON – Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Justin May was on KJDY’s Coffee Time Thursday to discuss the Mt. Vernon Fire District and the courageous volunteers therein. Chief May said that the district houses three stations between the City of Mt. Vernon Fire Department and the Mt. Vernon Rural Fire Department. The location is on Main Street for the main station, plus another city shop, as well as a location near Widow’s Creek west of town:

“We also have a third station down at Widow’s Creek Ranch. In the wintertime we house one of the older structure trucks there. In the summertime we swap that out for a wildland truck. That gives us the ability to respond better in that direction.

The sooner you get there—even if they run out of water before the water trucks get there—at least, it’s something there.”

Chief May said there are currently seventeen volunteers within the district, and there is a strong need for more. The monthly meeting is held every Monday night at 7 p.m. in the Mt. Vernon Fire Hall. Interested volunteers are encouraged to sit in on a meeting or inquire at City Hall.
