HEPPNER – Oregon Rep. Greg Smith (R-Heppner) is, like his peers, a part-time lawmaker. His full time job, as an economic development consultant, is project manager at the Columbia Development Authority. During a recent visit to Washington, D.C., smith wore his CDA hat to explore what needs to be done to get the U.S. Army to move forward with turning the Umatilla Chemical Weapons Depot to the CDA.
While the transfer has repeatedly been delayed, Smith said his trip to Washington showed him that the CDA Board of Directors is doing a good job.
“Our project is significantly further along than other military properties that are being decommissioned,” he said.
After his visit to Washington, Smith returned with new optimism.
“We have a two-star general coming out to meet with the Columbia Development Authority and to sit down and to work through what we hope will be the final details of the and transfer,” he said.
