Mountaineers Earn Player of the Week Honors

LA GRANDE – The Cascade Collegiate Conference and Frontier Conference announced its Players of the Week on Monday afternoon. Eastern Oregon University swept both the men’s and women’s basketball selection for Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Players of the Week, and also grabbed the second Frontier Conference Offensive Player and Special Teams of the Week nod for Football.
 
Earning Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors was Beverly Slater for the third week this season. On the men’s side Justin Jeske earned his first ever Player of the Week as a Mountie. For football, Kai Quinn put on a show for EOU’s home opener of the season, grabbing him Offensive Player of the Week for the Frontier Conference. Jaiden Machuca’s kicking performance in the win earne dhim Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the Frotnier Conference.
 
Jeske opened the weekend against the Lions with 14 points and 16 rebounds in the Mounties’ win over Multnomah University. He followed his performance with 20 points and 7 rebounds in the next game against the Lions. Jeske shot 15-22 altogether and averaged a double-double per game over the weekend.
 
This is the third week in a row Slater has won Women’s Basketball Player of the week honors. She finished with a double-double on Friday scoring 17 points and grabbing a game best 14 rebounds. Saturday she chipped in 14 points and 4 rebounds as EOU went 2-0 against Multnomah for the weekend. 
 
In the first game of the Mountaineer Football season, quarterback Kai Quinn led EOU to a 28-0 victory over Carroll College. He was efficient going 16-28 through the air for 216 yards and one touchdown. He also carried the ball six times for 15 yards. 

On special teams, Machuca was a perfect 4-4 in PAT’s in the win for EOU. When it came to booting the ball, Machuca averaged 46.2 yards per punt and he had a long of 51 yards on one. Two of his four punts on the day landed inside the 20-yard line.
