LA GRANDE – Last week the Union County Commissioners voted to close Mount Emily Recreation Area (MERA) due to extreme fire danger and the lack of firefighting resources. Wednesday afternoon (July 28, 2021), the Board of Commissioners re-evaluated the conditions with many concerns from the public and decided to open up non-motorized vehicles, such as bicycles, beginning Saturday (July 31st), however, Fox Hill remain closed until further notice as well as motorized vehicles.
All other restrictions still will be in place under the guidelines of the Oregon Department of Forestry. The Commissioners will evaluate the MERA closure during their next meeting, Wednesday, August 4th.
