KENNEWICK – A mother and her 11-year-old daughter escaped injury after pulling into their garage Tuesday night and discovering their home was on fire. Fire crews from the Kennewick Fire Department, along with mutual aid crews from the Richland Fire Department and Benton County Fire District No. 1, were dispatched at 5:34 p.m. to the home on the 9000 block of West Klamath Street.
Fire Chief Chad Michael said the homeowner and her daughter had pulled into the garage and discovered the fire after opening the door leading into the home. Realizing the danger, the young girl closed the door before exiting the garage with her mother. Michael said by ensuring the door was closed behind them when they left, the fire was contained inside the home until firefighters could put it out.
Nobody was injured. Both the homeowner and her daughter were examined as a precaution to ensure they did not suffer any medical issues from smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is presently undetermined and under investigation. Michael said due to extensive smoke, heat and fire damage throughout the home, the home is unable to be reoccupied until substantial repair and restoration work is completed.
