OLYMPIA – Rep. Gina Mosbrucker (R-Goldendale) has told Washington legislators they need to listen to the people following Friday’s certification of an initiative restoring authority for police to pursue offenders. Initiative 2113 garnered the support of more than 400,000 people.
“I hope it restores back where law enforcement can use their training and expertise to decide if it’s safer to pursue,” she said.
Mosbrucker, who is the ranking Republican on the House Community Safety, Justice, and Reentry Committee, has called on her colleagues to take quick and decisive action.
“Our job is to represent the people in the people’s house, and when we don’t have the votes to share what people are telling us they need, and law enforcement is telling us they want to be able to do their jobs and we’ve tied their hands by not being able to pursue somebody who’s just committed a crime or is a threat to our community,” she said. “I think it’s amazing and fantastic that the people of Washington state spoke, and it’s our job to listen to them.”
Initiative 2113 has been referred to the Senate Law and Justice Committee for further consideration.
