PENDLETON – The Pendleton City Council has set and met a goal of 50 new housing units a year. This year, that goal has already been more than doubled. Mayor John Turner said that by Aug. 1, there were permits issued for 138 new units.
The city’s housing crisis shows a need for housing of all levels, from low income to single-family homes. Turner said that the need for low-income families is great, but hope is in sight. Eighty units are being developed on Tutuilla Road by Chrisman Development, and the Horizon Project has received permission to build 70 units next year.
“That’s so important because we’ve got so many people that are working minimum wage jobs, below the median family income, and we need them in the workforce here in Pendleton,” he said.
Turner said people who lost housing in the 2020 flood of the Umatilla River have priority for affordable housing.
“If you lost your home due to the flood, you should have a priority in line, so please get in touch with CAPECO,” he said.
CAPECO’s number is 541-276-1926.
