(Press Release from Grant County Sheriff Todd McKinley)

Near 11:00 pm on the evening of March 18th, a caller reported a disturbance at the Meadowbrook Apartments in John Day.

Sunnie Jean Moore, 25, reportedly was armed with a machete and was going to stab Law Enforcement in the head, and then kill her mother. Moore was also reportedly “shooting up”.

Family was barricaded in the apartment’s bathroom away from Moore upon the Deputies arrival.

Moore was armed with a two-foot long short sword, and was successfully disarmed and taken into custody after a brief struggle.

No Deputies were injured.

Moore was transported to the Grant County Jail where she is being held on charges of Criminal Trespass 2, Criminal Mischief 3, and Felon in Possession of a Weapon.

Moore’s mother, Billie Jo Berry, contacted the KJDY newsroom and said the Sheriff’s release isn’t completely accurate. Berry said, “She was not trying to kill her mother, she was trying to kill herself. My daughter needs mental help, and she has not been receiving it in Grant County.” She continued with, “…she needs help, not more police charges.”

Billy Jo Berry said she has been trying to get mental help for her daughter.
