PENDLETON – The National Weather Service is cautioning everyone in the Columbia Basin that Monday’s temperatures could reach as high as 110 degrees. Overnight lows will not allow much recovery, forecast as falling to the 60s and lower 70s.

An excessive heat warning is in effect until 10 p.m. Monday for portions of northeastern, north central, and central Oregon as well as southeastern, south central, and central Washington state.

People are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air conditioned room if possible, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors. Those who have to spend time outside should reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening if possible.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing when possible.

The Occupation Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent scheduled rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. If heat stroke is suspected, call 911.
