Milton-Freewater schools launch interactive ‘Nutrition: Game On’ cafeteria program

MILTON-FREEWATER — The Milton-Freewater School District is bringing a new dining experience to elementary cafeterias this fall through “Nutrition: Game On,” an interactive food program designed by food service contractor Chartwells K12.
Launching for the 2026–27 school year, the initiative converts school lunchrooms into themed destinations to encourage healthy eating habits. The program uses chef-inspired recipes, global flavors, and hands-on activities to teach students about nutrition through storytelling and physical movement.
Central to the initiative is the Level Up Café, which features rotating monthly menu concepts. Featured items include Cherry Limeade Smoothie Bowls, Golden Turmeric Brown Rice, and Tandoori Tofu paired with Mango Lassis. Students track their culinary progress on interactive cafeteria game boards, earning badges as they complete nutrition quests, taste tests, and movement challenges. Animated characters lead the activities alongside culinary demonstrations and science projects.
“Every meal is an opportunity to spark curiosity,” Chartwells K12 Chief Executive Officer Amy Shaffer said. “When students are excited to try a new recipe, taste a new ingredient, or explore flavors from around the world, nutrition becomes something they experience, not something they’re taught.”
District officials and Chartwells representatives emphasize that the program aims to blend familiar foods with new ingredients to expand young palates.
“Nutrition: Game On combines foods students love with new flavors, memorable characters, and interactive experiences that make trying something new exciting,” said Ashley Kakas, senior vice president of marketing and communications for Chartwells K12.
