Milton-Freewater – Voters in Milton-Freewater will decide this May whether the city’s police department gets to escape the basement of city hall into its own building. A bond measure question has been approved for a general obligation bond for a new police department building.

The $7.7 million proposal would mean an increase of about $7.25 in property taxes per $100,000 of assessed value. The building was purchased by the city of Milton in 1929 and a police department has occupied the basement since city hall opened.

The basement lacks sunlight in most of the structure and its heating system is in poor repair. After two decades of talking about new quarters for law enforcement, the city council decided the time was right to make a change.

Milton-Freewater hired FFA Architecture & Interiors, Inc. of Portland to create a concept design on a city-owned lot right behind city hall on South Columbia Street. The proposed design calls for a single-story building to fit in with the homes and other buildings in the area.
