WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla Development Services Department recently launched a new digital pathway for heritage preservation, receiving its first application under a recently added “Historic Register Nomination” permit category in the city’s online portal.

The inaugural application seeks to add the McFeely Building, located at 127-129 W. Alder St., to the Walla Walla Register of Historic Places. Owners of the century-old structure intend to renovate the site into a mixed-use development once the historic designation is secured.

Built in 1904, the building originally served as a blacksmith shop and saloon before its 1911 conversion into a modern hotel featuring steam heat and electric lighting. It later housed the McFeely Tavern, a local staple that operated from 1932 until 2004.

The city’s historic register identifies properties with significant architectural or cultural ties to the community. Officials say the new online permit streamlines the process for protecting the city’s built environment heritage.
