SUMPTER — No additional growth, and also, no forward progress has been made on the McCully Fire north of Sumpter. Officials report the blaze remains 91% contained and 13,604 acres in size. Read the latest Forest Service press release below:
(From the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest)
The McCully Fire remains at 13,604 acres and 91% contained.
Firefighters have continued using a Type 1 helicopter throughout the week to address flare-ups in the uncontained Baldy Creek drainage area on the northwestern side of the fire.
Smoke and fire activity may be visible from nearby roads and the Anthony Lakes area. Fire officials are closely monitoring conditions and responding where and when possible.
Please do not call 911 to report smoke associated with the McCully Fire. Fire crews are aware of the activity and are actively monitoring the area.
Closure Still in Place
A closure remains in effect for public and firefighter safety. Work continues both within and around the fire perimeter as crews continue containment, monitoring, repair, and rehabilitation efforts.
Hunters and recreationists are asked to avoid the closed area.
Hunters have been observed inside the current fire closure. This is extremely dangerous – not only for those entering the area, but also for the firefighters and other personnel who are still working hard to contain the fire and complete repair and rehabilitation work.
Phase A Fire Restrictions remain in place. Find the most up to date fire restrictions, closures, and Forest related information at https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/wallowa-whitman
Please respect the closure, give firefighters room to work, and help keep everyone safe.
