PENDLETON – The Pendleton City Council received a report on the Pendleton Regional Youth Sports Complex being proposed by Round-Up City Development Corporation President Joseph Hull. The complex being proposed for land to the west of the Eastern Oregon Regional Airport has a long way to go before becoming a reality, but Mayor John Turner says the ball is rolling.

“Umatilla County has given $100,000 and the Pendleton Foundation Trust has given $50,000,” he said. “The city has gotten behind this with an offer to provide 40 acres of land out there on the end of the runway on Stage Gulch Road about a quarter mile past the police gun range.”

Turner said there is the hope more funds will come as the project progresses.

“Sen. Hansell is trying to help us get some capital construction money from the state,” he said. “At some point in time we will probably have to go out to the voters and ask for a general obligation bond.”

Turner said regional youth sports complexes bring in money all summer as teams opt to hold tournaments there. He cited facilities in Medford and Centralia as examples. The complex proposed by RCDC would consist of soccer, baseball, and softball fields as well as an RV park for families traveling to attend competitions.
