BAKER CITY – During this week’s Baker City Council meeting, Councilor Guyer made a motion to remove Beverly Calder as Mayor. Councilor Waggoner Sr. seconded the motion. There was a vote of 4-2, with Councilor Duman & Mayor Calder voting no. Councilor Spriet was absent from the meeting.
During the meeting Councilor Guyer cited a letter regarding budget shortfall, that was written by Calder as his reasoning for the motion, stating that the letter, which was submitted to the editor of a local newspaper, was an attack on the city and not appropriate. A copy of that letter was not distributed to Elkhorn Media Group.
Calder cited freedom of speech saying that the letter was to inform communities, noting that she believes the council is here to represent the community.
Matthew Diaz has been voted in as the new Mayor of Baker City with Nathan Hodgdon as acting mayor.
