MALHEUR & BAKER COUNTIES — Maps of damaged areas are coming available to landowners who were impacted by the Cow Valley, Bonita Road, or Durkee fires of 2024.
Baker County Sage-grouse LIT reports that a free, detailed map can be obtained by landowners that describes their property’s vegetation conditions and recovery status. The map was developed by Oregon State University and “refined with your on-the-ground knowledge,” according to the organization. Officials said, “The map can help guide grazing decisions, restoration planning, and potential post-fire recovery projects.”
For participating landowners OSU will develop a draft Emergency Stabilization and Recovery map that shows current vegetation conditions and recovery risks. OSU representatives will then meet with landowners on their property to review and refine the map. Malheur Rangeland Partnership states, “[The] final product will reflect both science-based data, and, most importantly, your firsthand knowledge of the land.”
Landowners are not obligated to participate in the free program. Those who are interested or have questions can contact Megan Wright at the Malheur Rangeland Partnership: (208) 329-4156 or malheurrpcoordinator@gmail.com.
