SALEM – The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issued 10 penalties in the month of October for various environmental violations. Only one of them concerned this area. Hubert Willer of Gresham was fined $6,300 for causing pollution to Willow Creek in Ione and constructing a road that violated a water quality standard.

“The crossing you constructed in Willow Creek altered the characteristics of the creek which is harmful to aquatic life,” DEQ wrote in a certified letter to Willer.

DEQ stated that the discharge of sediment into the creek also degraded water quality and harmed aquatic life by covering up food sources and smothering invertebrate organisms.

Willer has 20 days to either pay the fine or notify DEQ of an appeal. He has also been ordered to remove all remaining structure materials within 30 days of the order becoming final.
