SALEM – The Oregon State Police Public Information Office has answered Elkhorn Media Group’s request for information regarding a pursuit in the Pendleton area Sunday morning. It did not end in an arrest.

Here is the OSP report that was received Monday:

On Sunday morning, OSP stopped a suspect vehicle for speeding.  The trooper developed PC (probable cause) to arrest the subject for Fail to register as a sex offender.  When the suspect was advised he was under arrest, the suspect fled the scene in his vehicle eastbound onto I-84 from the stop location on I-82 MP 9.  OSP did not engage in a pursuit with this vehicle.

A short time later, a Pendleton trooper observed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, eastbound on I-84, but lost sight of the vehicle near MP 193 as it doubled back westbound on a secondary highway.  A Umatilla County Deputy later located the vehicle eastbound on a rural roadway and initiated a pursuit with the vehicle.  A tribal police officer stationed himself on the outskirts of Pendleton and attempted to deploy spikes but was unsuccessful. The suspect was last observed by Pendleton PD inside the city limits of Pendleton.

Any further information regarding a pursuit should be directed to the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office.

The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office had no new information to add when contacted yesterday. Meanwhile, Pendleton Police Chief Chuck Byram says his officers only had minimal involvement in the incident.
