FINLEY – The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a drowning that occurred Saturday in the Columbia River near Finley. It appears strong winds and waves contributed to a vessel taking on water and capsizing.
The victim has been identified as William V. Orndorfff, 52. The coroner’s office said an autopsy has not been scheduled yet.
Authorities said Orndorff’s cousin, Michael Miller, called 911 just after 4 p.m. to report his vessel was sinking. Miller reported Orndorff went overboard without a life jacket on. Miller, however, was able to put a life jacket on and survived.
The call was dispatched to Columbia Basin Dive Rescue and Benton County Fire District No. 1. The use of the Pasco Fire Department’s watercraft was also requested. The U.S. Coast Guard was notified and advised their helicopter was in Astoria, approximately 90 minutes away.
The Pasco Fire Department’s vessel was first on scene and located both men in the water. Orndorff was unresponsive and CPR was immediately initiated. Lifesaving attempts continued, including after arriving at the hospital, but were ultimately unsuccessful.
