WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla Police Department arrested Matthew R. Hammond, 33, of Walla Walla in connection to the August 7 fire at 409 West Rees Avenue. He was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Walla Walla County Jail for arson, burglary, and malicious mischief, all in the second degree.

Detectives collected a DNA sample from the crime scene which was sent to the Washington State Crime Lab for analysis. The sample matched Hammond’s DNA which was already on file from a previous felony conviction. Probable cause was developed and Hammond was located and arrested.

WWPD said other fires in the area over the past several months are still being investigated.
