Man Arrested After Rock-Throwing Vandalism Spree at Washington State Capitol Building

OLYMPIA – An intoxicated man was arrested early Thursday morning after allegedly smashing several windows and doors at the Legislative Building on the Washington State Capitol campus, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Clayton Seaborn, 21, was booked into Thurston County Jail on charges of DUI, second-degree assault, and first-degree malicious mischief.
Washington State Patrol says at approximately 1:15 a.m. a Washington State Trooper heard loud noises near the northwest corner of the Legislative Building, which is the operational center of the campus. The trooper saw a man, later identified as Seaborn, throwing large rocks at first-floor windows.
When a second trooper arrived, the suspect fled in a white 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, prompting a police pursuit.
Officers from the Olympia Police Department joined the chase, which moved onto a power station service access road on the east side of Capitol Lake. During the pursuit, the suspect drove across a wooden pedestrian bridge before crashing a short time later.
Seaborn then fled on foot but was taken into custody after security cameras spotted him near railroad tracks at the south end of Marathon Park.
A trooper’s vehicle was struck by Seaborn’s car during the incident. The vehicle sustained minor damage, and the trooper was not injured.
A preliminary assessment of the building revealed that Seaborn did not gain entry. However, 13 windows and two doors sustained heavy damage. Investigators believe Seaborn also used his hands or fists to cause some of the damage, noting that blood was found on several windows.
Officials said protective film installed on the windows after a previous vandalism incident worked as intended, preventing the suspect from entering and limiting damage to the interior.
The Department of Enterprise Services is handling cleanup and restoration efforts.
