JOHN DAY, PRAIRIE CITY AND HINES(Release from U.S. Forest Service)-The Malheur National Forest would like to remind the public that current firewood permits will expire on December 31, 2024.
Malheur National Forest firewood permits for the 2025 season are scheduled to be available the fourth week in January.
A valid permit, firewood tags, map and regulations are required to have on hand when cutting and transporting firewood. 2024 Personal use firewood permits can be obtained at any Malheur National Forest Office until Tuesday, December 31, 2024. Personal use firewood permits are intended to be used for the collection of firewood, not other forest products.
Where material may not be cut:
1. Trees identified by signs, paint, tags or within posted timber sales.
2. Do not cut or gather firewood: Within 300 feet distance from any live stream, lake or pond.
3. Trees within an administrative site such as: campgrounds, designated old growth stands, wilderness, research plots, wild and scenic corridors, and other areas requiring special protection. (see Commercial Use Firewood map)
4. Trees within county right of way adjacent to county roads within the Malheur National Forest without permit from County Road Master.
5. For safety and to maintain a visual corridor, no trees may be cut within 150 feet of the following roads: All U.S. Highways, State Highways, County Roads, Forest Roads 1370, 15 (paved portion), 1520, 16, 1640, 17, 31, 36, 41, 43 and 47.
