Malheur County to update its Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan

MALHEUR COUNTY — An update to Malheur County’s Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan is in the works. MCEM explains in the release below:

Malheur County is updating its Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan (NHMP). This work is in cooperation with the State of Oregon’s Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD). With re-adoption of the plan, Malheur County will maintain its eligibility to apply for federal funding towards natural hazard mitigation projects. A Steering Committee with members representing Malheur County, its cities, and other interested parties are working together to guide the planning process and update the plan.
A natural hazard mitigation plan provides communities with a set of goals, action items, and resources designed to reduce risk from future natural disaster events. Engaging in mitigation activities provides jurisdictions with several benefits. It reduces loss of life, loss of property, loss of essential services and critical facilities, and economic hardship. It can reduce recovery and reconstruction costs after a natural disaster. It also increases cooperation and communication within the community through the planning process and increases potential for state and federal funding for recovery and reconstruction projects.
