Major Pendleton I-84 project begins Monday

PENDLETON – The Oregon Department of Transportation says motorists can expect shoulder closures and reduced speeds beginning Monday through October between Pendleton exits 207 and 209. This is phase one of a two-phase project.

In this first phase, crews are building crossovers and a temporary Interstate 84 entrance eastbound from Rieth Road at Exit 207. Crossovers shift traffic from one side of the highway to the other, allowing vehicles to continue in a single lane in each direction while crews work. They are created to give workers more space and to limit how often traffic control needs to be set up and removed. The speed limit will be lowered to 55 miles per hour instead of 65 in both directions between exits 207 and 209.

The second phase of the project is scheduled for next summer. During that time, workers will be repairing a total of four bridges. Two of the spans are Union Pacific Railroad bridges that are on I-84eastbound and westbound east of Exit 207. The other two are bridges over the Umatilla River on I-84 in both directions west of Exit 209.

Crews will be repairing and repaving bridge decks, installing new joints, and repairing and repaving the transitions from roads to bridges. All four spans are showing signs of wear. ODOT says the repairs will preserve and extend the life of the bridges and delay the need for replacement.

The entire project is due to be completed in October 2027.
