BAKER CITY – Lieutenant Jacobs and Firefighters Husk and Chavez with Baker City Fire and Rescue (BCFD) tried out the new padlock prop this week. According to information posted by BCFD, “Crews armed with “the irons” can defeat locks easily without having to go back to the engine for bolt cutters or saws, saving precious time.
“The irons” is the nickname given to the flat-head axe/halligan combo and is the go-to for all forcible entry work on fires. The axe is a standard single-bit 8lb axe with a fiberglass or wooden handle. The halligan is a specialized firefighting tool invented by FDNY Fire Chief Hugh Halligan in the 1940s. The single piece halligan carried by Baker City Firefighters is remarkably similar to it’s original design over 80 years ago. It’s characteristic fork, pick, and adz design make it unstoppable for almost every situation it encounters.”
