Lower Dry Creek Fire reaches 57% containment amid new Red Flag Warning

ATHENA — Firefighters increased containment to 57% on the Lower Dry Creek Fire as crews capitalized on favorable conditions, according to the latest update released Friday night by the Oregon State Fire Marshal Red Incident Management Team.

Following more precise mapping, officials now estimate the wildfire has burned 8,095.6 acres. Firefighters made substantial progress securing fire lines, extinguishing interior hot spots, and mopping up near structures. Overnight, crews are focused on removing residual heat between Little Dry Creek and Upper Dry Creek, while continuing to look for hot spots on the south and southeast edges of the perimeter.

Ongoing damage assessments revealed one additional destroyed primary residence, raising the total to six. Property losses also include 40 outbuildings, a figure that excludes vehicles. Despite the destruction, some progress allowed officials to demobilize the Multnomah County Task Force to assist with the Rowe Complex in Wheeler County. Additionally, the American Red Cross shelter at Sunridge Middle School in Pendleton has officially closed.

Challenges remain as the National Weather Service in Pendleton issued a Red Flag Warning for high winds and low relative humidity, effective through 10 p.m. Saturday. Officials warn these conditions create an elevated risk for rapid fire growth.

The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office has reduced some evacuation zones, but Level 2 (“Be Set”) and Level 3 (“Go Now”) orders remain active for portions of the fire area. Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring official evacuation information and remain prepared should conditions change.

Currently, 189 total personnel, including 22 engines and two bulldozers, remain engaged on the incident under the direction of Oregon State Fire Marshal Incident Commander Ian Yocum.
