(Press Release from Grant County Sheriff Todd McKinley)

It was a busy week leading up to and through the Memorial Day weekend for the Grant County Sheriff’s Office staff.

On Wednesday evening, the 22nd, a boater was reported overdue on the North Fork of the John Day River, having put in near Camas Creek on the 18th, and not making it to Monument by the 20th as scheduled. An evening search was conducted in inclement weather, and the boaters were located the following day. The weather had been a factor in the boater’s inability to get through the remote section of river, with snow and wind hampering their efforts.

On Friday the 24th, Deputies responded to a reported domestic disturbance that had occurred on Wilderness Lane at Barnwood Ventures. Arrested was Nicholas Alexander, 46, of John Day, who resisted arrest and was charged with additional crimes.

Saturday, the 25th saw deputies respond to a residence on West Highway John Day for a welfare check. Upon arrival, Sgt. Rand located Donald “Fritz” Phillips, 74, deceased of apparent natural causes. No foul play was suspected.

On Sunday, the 26th, Thomas Busby, 52, of Prairie City, was arrested for menacing after allegedly kicking in the door of a Mt. Vernon residents’ camper. Busby resisted arrest and acquired additional charges. His child was present and was taken into care by the Department of Human Services.

On Monday morning, the 28th, Samuel Bates, 36 of Canyon City, was arrested for disorderly conduct and for discharging a firearm in the city limits.

Later that same day, Michael Green, 24, of John Day was involved in a hit and run at 677 West Main, and was arrested at the Blue Mt. Hospital for Criminal Mischief 1 and 2, Reckless Driving, Hit and Run X2 and Disorderly Conduct.

As the event at 677 West Main [was] occurring, a report of a DUII and a Domestic Disturbance near Fawn Springs was reported, resulting in Corey Lenz, 51, of John Day being arrested for the charges of DUII and Assault 4th degree.

Multiple other calls for service came in throughout the weekend, that required Deputies being called in to assist.
