LONG CREEK – Long Creek School just recently wrapped up a reading activity called IditaRead, which is a learning opportunity for students that combines reading with the famous dogsled trail in Alaska. Teacher and Organizer Joan Walczyk said students had a lot of fun:
“At the school, we read over 20,000 minutes for the month of March, so that was some great excitement among students to read and get prizes.
Every minute that they read they go a mile on the trail, so they had to 998 minutes of reading in to make it to Nome on the trail.”
Long Creek School District #17 recently posted to social media about the IditaRead:

Long Creek School students have finished the 2023 Iditaread Challenge. The Iditaread is a reading challenge held in echo of the Iditarod Race in Alaska. It was open to all staff and students. A log was kept of reading times and markers moved along the “trail” from Anchorage to Nome. In order to complete the race a total of 998 minutes (16.63 hours) of reading was needed. We had 19 ‘mushers’ participating, 14 of those made it to Nome. A total of 20, 526 Minutes of reading was done by all the participants combined. Ellaine Dunn made it to Nome before anyone, with Mrs. Porter and Mr. Glaze coming in second and third place. My favorite moment was asking a 6 year old who was reading in the hallway what they were doing, and they quite dramatically replied “I just HAVE to make it to Nome.” Thank you Mrs. Walczyk for organizing this challenge. Congratulations to all mushers who participated.
