Lock up your prescription medications so they don’t end up in the wrong hands

BAKER CITY – Do you have expired, unused or unwanted prescription medications to dispose of? Today is the day.  Thanks to a collaboration between New Directions Northwest, the Baker County Safe Communities Coalition, Elkhorn Media Group and the Baker County Sheriff’s Office you can properly dispose of these items today at New Directions Northwest from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

In addition to this the Baker County Safe Communities Coalition will be handing out free medication lock boxes.

If any of the following situations apply to your household, it may be a good idea to consider getting a lock box:

•You have prescription medications of any type in your home.  Prescription opioids are highly addictive and frequently misused, but any prescription medication can cause harm if taken by anyone other than the individual it was prescribed to.

•You have over the counter medications.  Many over the counter medications for colds contain Dextromethorphan (DXM). This ingredient has been used to obtain a high and when taken in large quantities can lead to overdose.

•You have pet medications.  Pet medications are often the same medications that humans use, especially when it comes to pain killers.  Even pet medications have the potential to cause harm and be misused. For more information on this program, contact New Directions Northwest or the Baker County Sheriff’s office
