Local spring cleanup days begin this month (current schedules included)

NORTHEAST OREGON – Spring is here, and that means its time to get cleaning. Throughout April and May, various cities and communities across Eastern Oregon will be hosting local volunteer clean up days to help clear out junk and yard debris now that the snow has melted off. Currently available cleanup day schedules by city, along with details and other instructions, are listed below. Note that not all cities and community organizations have announced their cleanup schedules. We will update the list as more schedules are published. Currently, confirmed clean up day schedules are as follows:

Union County

La Grande

  • Organized by La Grande Mainstreet Downtown
  • Volunteers will help clean up around La Grande
  • April 26th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Meet at 102 Depot Street at 9:00 a.m.
  • Call (541) 963-1223 or email director@lagrandemainstreet.org to volunteer
  • Bring gloves and a trash bag if possible
  • A weed eating goat will be present
    • Volunteers can pet the goat
  • Presentations from local ecologists from 1-2 p.m.

La Grande (tire cleanup)

  • Organized by La Grande Rotary, Les Schwab Tire Center of La Grande, and EOU Athletics
  • Union County residents can dispose of unmounted car and light truck tires
  • April 26th from 8 a.m. to noon
  • Drop of tires at Les Schwab Tire Center of La Grande, 2306 Adams Ave (just off 20th Street) at no charge.
  • Only unmounted tires are accepted, no wheels or rims can be accepted.

City of Union

  • Organized by the City of Union. UNION RESIDENTS ONLY
  • City will be accepting items/debris from residents.
  • May 3rd from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Meet at the Public Works Shops 61323, Highway 203 (Next to the gun club)
    • Staff members will be on hand to direct volunteers near the entrance gate
  • Accepted items:
    • Yard debris
    • Electronics
    • Tires (without rims)
    • Household items (appliances, lawn mowers, furniture, mattresses, etc)
    • Outdoor kids’ toys and bikes
  • Non-accepted items:
    • Household garbage
    • Roofing Shingles
    • Ashes
    • Hazardous waste (paint, chemicals, etc.)
    • Batteries
  • Space is limited. Items will not be accepted once the city’s bin is full 
  • Residents are asked to keep items separated when loading them as this will make unloading easier

City of Cove

  • Organized by the City of Cove
  • May 17th from 8:00 a.m. to noon
  • Dumpsters and scrap metal bins will be placed at City Hall. Burnable trash can be dumped at a separate location near the Conley Road ponds
  • Accepted Items:
    • Scrap metal
    • Wood cuttings
    • Yard trimmings
    • Untreated wood
    • Treated wood (only in dumpsters, not burn site)
    • Particle board (only in dumpsters, not burn site)
    • Some appliances such as refrigerators and freezers. Residents are asked to provide a 30-dollar donation to cover disposal costs of compressor appliances
  • Non-accepted Items:
    • Liquids
    • Gasses
    • Chemicals/hazardous materials
    • Sharps containers

North Powder

  • Organized by City of North Powder
  • Saturday, April 26th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Dumpsters will be located behind the Badger Mart and the city brush pile will be open for yard debris.
  • $5 dollar dumping fee is required for dumpster usage
  • Accepted items (including but not limited to)
    • Furniture
    • Small appliances
    • Carpets
    • Garden hoses
    • old fencing material (no nails)
    • open and DRIED paint cans
    • old dishes, etc.
  • Non accepted Items:
    • Oil
    • Ashes
    • regular household garbage (diapers, kitchen scraps, wastepaper, etc).

The city requests that normal recycling be taken to the recycling center. Residents can contact City Hall at (541)-898-2185 prior to April 25 to arrange assistance with hauling items or to volunteer to help haul items.

Elgin

Imbler

Baker County

Baker City

  • Powder River Spring Cleanup organized by SOLVE Oregon, Powder Basin Watershed Council, and North Seven Brewer.
  • Volunteers will help remove trash from the Powder River along the Leo Alder Memorial Parkway
  • April 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Meet at Geiser-Pollman Park Pavillion, 1723 Madison St Baker City, 
  • Recommended to wear closed-toed shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, and a backpack.
  • Bring a water bottle, waders (if cleaning trash from the Powder River) and personal tools if available
  • Bathrooms available at Geiser-Pollman Park.
  • Participants are asked to use Baker County Library parking lot or parking spots along Campbell St, Madison St, or Grove St.

Halfway

  • Hosted by Baker County Parks and Recreation at the Halfway Wigwam
  • April 26th Beginning at 9:00 a.m.
  • Meeting in the parking area of the Hells Canyon Wayside
  • Participants asked to bring a chair, gloves, appropriate footwear, rakes, snips and other equipment
  • Barbeque lunch will be provided at noon after cleanup

Huntington

The city of Huntington is not currently organizing a dedicated city cleanup day. However, bi-weekly transfer station (garbage dump) vouchers are being offered to residents at city hall. Sumpter

A cleanup event is tentatively being organized for the city cemetery for May 16. A local youth group is already handling all volunteer needs. No other cleanup days have been scheduled.

Wallowa County

Joseph

  • City will be accepting items/debris from residents.
  • April 26, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Drop off garbage at the Joseph Transfer Site, 3/4 west of Joseph on Airport Lane (see signs)
  • Residents in need of assistance can call city hall to schedule in advance at 541-432-3832 (call to 1:30 p.m. April 25th)

  • Meet at Warde Park
  • Cleaning will start between Southeast 1st and Southwest Depot Streets
  • Barbeque Lunch Provided by City staff.

Wallowa

  • Organized by the City of Wallowa
  • April 26 from 9 a.m. to noon
  • 202 East 4th Street, just off the truck route
