NORTHEAST OREGON —

Those planning to indulge in New Year’s Eve festivities are warned to think twice before getting behind the wheel.

Law enforcement agencies across the state will be ramping up patrols on December 31, as part of a strategic effort to crack down on DUII drivers and other violations.

Oregon State Police says it is enhancing patrols across the state, including Baker, Union and Wallowa counties.

Troopers will be focusing on DUII and other Fatal-5 violations that are statistically shown to contribute to serious injury and fatal crashes. Fatal 5 violations include:

  • Speed
  • Occupant Safety
  • Lane Usage
  • Impaired Driving
  • Distracted Driving

In 2023 alone (Jan 1-Dec 21), OSP has arrested more than 2,657 suspects for DUII statewide.

OSP says this is up 2.5 percent from 2022 with 2,593 arrests.

The Baker County Sheriff’s Office also says there’ll be more deputies on streets and county highways this weekend. The Sheriff’s Office was awarded grant funds via Oregon Impact, which requires that deputies perform high visibility enforcement overtime patrols from December 13- January 1.

“With New Year’s Eve approaching, I encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly and plan ahead,” said Sheriff Travis Ash. “Arrange for a designated driver. If you are hosting, make sure everyone has a sober ride home. Driving under the influence has deadly consequences. Let’s keep the roadways safe so that our loved ones can make it home.”
