EASTERN OREGON — After two weeks in Texas, wildland firefighters from Eastern Oregon and across the state are headed home.

The strike teams from Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) were sent to battle the largest wildfire in Texas history. Those strike teams included firefighters from Baker City, La Grande and John Day.

The Smokehouse Creek fire burned more than a million acres near Amarillo, in the Texas Panhandle area.

It’s now 100-percent contained, and cleanup and relief efforts continue. ODF is sending another strike team to help in mopping up.
