BURNS-Night training took on a steep perspective this week as local firefighters scaled a fully extended 75-foot ladder set at a 60-degree angle, outfitted in complete personal protective equipment (PPE).

The aerial ladder climb is widely considered a foundational rite of passage for rookie and probationary firefighters in departments around the world. Because the truck was newly acquired by the department, veteran and junior crew members alike faced the exercise as novices on the new apparatus.

Department officials highlighted that while the drill requires physical endurance, the exercise is primarily a mental milestone designed to test focus under demanding conditions. The drill serves several critical functions:

  • Overcoming Acrophobia: Helping firefighters build confidence and manage fear at significant height.
  • Trusting Equipment: Demonstrating the stability and load capacities of the new apparatus while scaled high off the ground.
  • Developing Muscle Memory: Ensuring fluid movements and safety transitions under high-stress, high-consequence scenarios.

By completing the night drill, the crew ensured seamless operation of the new apparatus, strengthening the department’s readiness for elevated rescues and structural fire response.
