BURNS-Firefighters from across the region spent the weekend of October 24–25 engaged in hands-on, scenario-based aerial operations training hosted by the Burns Fire Department.

The two-day National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Apparatus Equipped with Aerial Device course brought together personnel from the Burns Fire Department, the Hines Fire Department—led by Chief Murphy—and members of the John Day Volunteer Firefighter Association.

Prior to the practical weekend sessions, attending firefighters were required to complete an extensive online knowledge curriculum to build a foundation in aerial theory, apparatus mechanics, and safety protocols.

Instructor Josh Feller from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) traveled to the Burns station to lead the hands-on instruction. Day one focused heavily on the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) and mastering precise apparatus placement under varying spatial constraints.

On the second day, crews moved to the Lincoln Jr. High building, using the facility as a practical prop for realistic tactical drills. Firefighters practiced advanced radio communications, tactical positioning, and specialized aerial operations, including configuring ladder trucks for aerial master stream deployment and high-angle rescue modes.

Local fire officials emphasized that multi-agency exercises of this nature are crucial for maintaining emergency readiness across Harney County and surrounding communities. Hands-on drills allow crews to refine their familiarity with heavy equipment and foster inter-agency coordination before responding to real-world structure fires and complex technical rescues.

Department leaders expressed gratitude to DPSST, Burns Public Works, Harney County Fairgrounds Manager Conner, and the property owners of Lincoln Jr. High for providing facilities and support to make the training dynamic a success.
