LA GRANDE – Members of the La Grande Middle School PTO recently spent a weekend giving a facelift to the middle school staff breakroom. According to PTO co-president Shayla Rollins “The makeover was a huge success, and the letters from staff have been pouring in. It all started with a tour of the LMS Annex. Our inspiration came from the use of old furniture found at the LMS annex which is set to be torn down this spring. We took old items and gave them new life, such as the locker systems we added a hardwood top and assigned one to each teacher and classified for their personal belongings. We reused an old apothecary cabinet by again adding a new top, rolling casters and made a coffee bar. We found an old beam that had hooks and made a new coat rack. Adding a wood frame to the existing cork board brought new life. Because of limited funds we covered all the kitchen cabinets, storage cabinet and table top with peel & stick vinyl. Adding new curtains and live plants brought life into this neglected break room.”
Rollins also noted some community sponsors that help with the PTO Fundraising efforts for the project.
Ace Hardware – painting supplies
La Grande Paint and Glass – paint
Jubilee – 3 live plants
Fitzgerald – fresh flowers for classified appreciation and room reveal
Help throughout the weekend project came from a number of people including, LMS Principal Chris Wagner and his wife Holly Wagner, Shayla Rollins for co-president LMS PTO, Savannah Altenburg co-president for LMS PTO and her husband Andy Altenburg, Rebecca Loman and her husband Chris Loman with Loman Construction, Codi Eby, Leanna May, Jamie Daniel, and Kaycee St Claire.
A second phase is being planned for this revamp, which is new flooring. After a donation from Legacy Ford a total of $2400 still needs to be raised in order to replace the flooring. Carpet One Floor and Home has offered a huge discount according to Rollins, and the PTO hopes to have the work done by Teacher Appreciation Week which is May 8-12.
