COLLEGE PLACE – The Lions Park renovation project has been in the works for seven years, with Nelson Construction now leading the construction. The upgrades will include a new multi-use field, dredging the pond, installing a splash pad, playground equipment, and walking path; plus electrical installations for hosting events and decorating for holidays. The park is expected to open in May 2025 in time for the farmer’s market and the project continues to proceed smoothly.
College Place City Administrator Mike Rizzitiello explains phase two involves a new community center, for which architectural plans will be developed in fiscal year 2025. Kennewick-based Design West Architects will assist, and collaborations will occur with the YMCA and the Walla Walla County Rural Library District. Fundraising efforts include federal and state earmark money, with more grants and earmarks to be sought. Demolition of the existing community center is planned for next year, with a goal to complete the new two-story facility by 2026, allowing it to open in 2027. This center will feature community rooms, a commercial kitchen, child care, a permanent library branch, and computer labs.
Additionally, there’s a project to extend a sidewalk from downtown College Place to Lions Park, enhancing access for pedestrians and cyclists. The park renovation and new community center aim to create a major community hub.
Rizzitiello said the project also includes significant stormwater improvements. A large grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology funded the installation of filters underground in the new parking lot, which will clean stormwater before it enters Garrison Creek. Dredging of the pond and the addition of a fishing dock are part of this effort, restoring the area to a natural state. Work has progressed as planned, with proper coordination with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and water flow has been restored to the creek.
