Lightning storm blasts regions, igniting multiple wildfires in Harney County Area

HARNEY COUNTY-A violent wave of thunderstorms packed with lightning has left fire crews scrambling across Harney County and surrounding areas. Following intense lightning activity on Wednesday and Thursday, a multitude of small, fast-moving blazes have broken out, pushing local fire resources to their limits.

As of Friday, initial attack teams are battling dry conditions, unpredictable winds, and remote terrain to suppress several fires currently sitting at zero percent containment.

The most significant threat in the region is the Riddle Fire, which has quickly expanded to 315 acres. Fire officials report that the blaze is burning through highly volatile fuels, including dry grass, brush, and juniper.

Because of erratic, shifting wind gusts and low fuel moisture, crews have been unable to establish defensive lines. The Riddle Fire remains at 0% containment. Multiple ground crews and air resources, including air tankers dropping retardant, are actively working the area to slow its forward progress.

Further west, the lightning front triggered a cluster of three new blazes yesterday near the Riley area, stretching resources along the Highway 20 corridor:

• The Egypt Fire: This fire has quickly become a major concern, surging to 150 acres. It is burning entirely uncontained (0% containment) in a remote area approximately 30 miles off Highway 20.
• The Stone Creek Fire: Located much further into the backcountry—about 60 miles off Highway 20—this blaze has been mapped at 100 acres with 0% containment.
• The Rock Fire: Positioned just off Highway 20, initial attack teams are aggressively targeting this start to prevent it from encroaching on the primary transit corridor.

In addition to the named blazes, fire managers are tracking a cluster of smaller starts. Among them is the Burnt Basin Fire, located roughly 20 miles up Radar Road. Due to the rapid pace of the storm and the isolation of the site, dispatch reports indicate there is currently no official information on its exact acreage or containment level.

Safety Advisory: Fire officials urge the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid backcountry roads near active incidents. Shifting winds can alter fire behavior in minutes. Drivers on Highway 20 should be alert for smoky conditions, low visibility, and sudden movements of emergency response vehicles.
