WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla City Council meets tonight (Wednesday) at 6:30. Two major agenda items involve the city library expansion project and police patrol utility vehicle replacement.

The council will consider authorizing an agreement between the city and SHKS Architects for architectural design services for the library expansion and renovation project. The agreement is not to exceed $50,000. The Walla Walla Public Library was built in 1970 and except for a 5,000 square foot addition in 2006, most of the library has not been renovated in 51 years. With nearly 200,000 visitors passing through the library’s doors annually, the original ceiling, lights, windows, shelving, furniture, and flooring have far exceeded their lifespan.

The state Department of Commerce offers a matching grant of up to $2 million. To be considered for this grant, the city must have basic architectural plans and cost estimates. In addition, if the city is successful with the grant funding, the city expects it will attract other donations and grant opportunities allowing the money and project to go farther.

The council will also consider a recommendation by city staff to adopt a resolution authorizing City Manager Nabiel Shawa to approve the purchase of seven new police patrol utility vehicles. This includes all associated upfitting requirements using the established agreement between the city and Washington State Department of Enterprise Services from Bud Clary Ford Hyundai of Longview, and Emergency Responder Services not to exceed a total purchasing cost of $500,000 including sales tax, which is included in the city’s 2022 vehicle/equipment replacement program and budget.

Members of the public may attend the city council meeting but must wear face masks or face shields to attend. The meeting will be streamed on the city’s website and via Zoom. The meeting ID number is 868 1300 4216.
